📜 History of the Powerball Lottery in the U.S.
The history of Powerball dates back to February 13, 1987, when the lotteries of Washington D.C., Iowa, Kansas, Oregon, Rhode Island, and West Virginia joined forces to form the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). Mississippi joined Powerball in January 2020 as the 48th state to participate, starting ticket sales in that region. Currently, Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah are the only states that do not offer this game.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Powerball continued its draws, adjusting the minimum jackpot to $20 million.
On August 23, 2021, Powerball added Monday draws, marking the first change to its schedule since its inception, as it was previously played only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Additionally, Double Play was introduced in some states, offering the chance to win up to $10 million in an additional draw.
Finally, on November 7, 2022, a jackpot exceeding $2 billion was reached for the first time in history. The prize was claimed by a single winner from California, setting the record for the highest payout ever awarded in a lottery worldwide.
